What is the Day Away Program?
Here at the Alzheimer Society we understand just how difficult it is to provide ongoing care for someone with Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.
The Day Away program was established to provide the primary caregiver with a necessary and appreciated break. Caregivers are given the opportunity to spend a day as they wish while their loved ones spend the day participating in planned activities and social time in a safe, understanding atmosphere with trained professionals and volunteers.
Trained staff and volunteers encourage the client to participate in a variety of activities including:
- exercising and short walks.
- arts and crafts.
- music and relaxation therapy.
- games and projects.
- special outings.
All activities are geared to the client's particular interests and abilities.
Eligibility
A referral from CCAC is required prior admission. An assessment will be completed by the Society's Client Programs Manager to determine if the client meets the criteria for the Day Away program, and an Admission Agreement will be signed by the client and caregiver.
Transportation
Family members are encouraged to transport the participants to and from the program. In the event that transportation is unavailable, the Society may be able to provide transportation on one of the program vans.
